Power Liposuction

Over the past year, a new tool has been added to the arsenal of the Liposuction surgeon. Powered assisted liposuction (P.A.L.) is the newest option for men and women seeking to remove unwanted fat and contour areas of the body.

The P.A.L. uses a motorized cannula (the tube used to extract fat). This new method that mechanizes the natural movement of the cannula allows the surgeon to remove fat cells more rapidly, as well as possibly creating a smoother more natural appearance in the patient after liposuction surgery.

The oscillating cannula is similar to the motion of an electric toothbrush. It is lightweight and easy to use, thereby reducing the physical stress on the doctor and allowing him/her to perform the liposuction procedure more rapidly and obtain a greater consistency across large areas of the body. The moving cannula is able to remove fat while being held in one place. This provides the doctor with a more precise way to sculpt sensitive areas of the body. Because of the motion of the cannula, it passes much easier through the tissues.

Compared to ultrasound liposuction, other advantages of the power liposuction may include the use of smaller incisions to accommodate the cannula, and less operative time, thereby reducing the length of anesthesia.

In denser fat, such as in male liposuction we use the P.A.L. in conjunction with other modalities to optimize the result to the patient. Ultrasound liposuction may still be used together with P.A.L. to break up and liquefy the fat cells. P.A.L. is then used for further refinement and contouring. Most surgeons now use the power addition to decrease the time of surgery. The procedure is then followed by contouring with a traditional cannula.

Adding the new power liposuction to other liposuction techniques allows the doctor to provide several modalities in the treatment of each patient, thereby optimizing the result to any given area.
